Luncheon Was The Preserve of Ladies
The word lunch is an abbreviation of luncheon, which is derived from the Old English word, nuncheon, which translates as ‘noon drink’. The term has been in common use since 1823, around the time of the beginning of the industrial revolution in Europe. Workers started to work long hours at factories, far from home, seriously disrupting age old rural eating habits. They took to bringing something portable to eat during a break in the middle of the day. The lunch meal gradually became institutionalised over the decades. Before the industrial revolution, luncheon was the preserve of ladies, who would eat and converse with each other while their husbands were out. Even as late as 1945, American etiquette expert, Emily Post, wrote that luncheon is ‘generally given by and for women, but it is not unusual, especially in summer places or in town on Saturday or Sunday, to include an equal number of men.’
